History

Ipswich Junior Grammar School has offered boys and girls a first-class, non-denominational, independent primary education for more than two decades. From our very first day, we have been committed to innovation and excellence.

We share a campus with the heritage-listed Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS), in the heart of Ipswich overlooking Bremer River.

For more than a century, IGGS was a girls-only, secondary school.

In the late 1990s, we expanded to offer primary classes and purpose built the Brockwell Gill Foundation Centre to accommodate our early learners.

After recognising the many benefits of a co-educational experience in the Junior years, we began to admit young boys from Prep to Year 4 at the close of the 20th century.

In 2005, the Junior School became a separate entity as the Ipswich Junior Grammar School, though still under the jurisdiction of the IGGS board of Trustees and Principal.

Our purpose-built, state-of-the-art Mavis Parkinson Centre opened in 2009, followed by our purpose-built Early Education Centre for children from Kindy to Pre-Prep in 2010.

After extensive consultation with our School families, and in response to their requests, we made the decision to extend co-education from Year 4 through to Year 6 in 2014, offering a full co-ed primary experience.

Today, our students are based across the Brockwell Gill Foundation Centre houses, the Mavis Parkinson Centre and John Hancock Centre near the rainforest. Now boys and girls, siblings and friends can benefit from a family-friendly Grammar school education from an early age.
